The COMAC C919 is a commercial jetliner developed by the Commercial Aircraft Corporation of China (COMAC). Launched in 2008, the C919 represents China's ambitious entry into the large commercial aircraft market, aiming to compete with industry leaders like Boeing and Airbus. The aircraft is designed to accommodate around 168 to 190 passengers, with a range of approximately 4,075 to 5,555 kilometers. It features advanced aerodynamics, efficient engines, and modern avionics systems. The C919's development has been a significant undertaking for COMAC, involving collaboration with various domestic and international partners. The aircraft aims to combine state-of-the-art technology, safety, and reliability to cater to the growing demand for air travel in China and beyond. As it continues to undergo testing and certification, the COMAC C919 represents a significant milestone in China's aviation industry and highlights the country's ambitions to become a major player in the global aerospace market.
Wikipedia has the number of current (May '23) orders as a bit over 500, whereas it also notes that Comac themselves report over 1,200 orders. Chinese airlines will almost certainly make up the vast majority of the orders, but it's at least possible that the airliner will achieve success is developing countries, or in countries which are more aligned with China.
It's also possible that the C919 will be a commercial failure and that even Chinese airlines will try to operate as few as is politically possible. That's the joy of this market!
